Forearm splints strikingly resembles shin splints in the lower leg, but considered uncommon. The condition develops gradually, usually among those who repeatedly utilize the wrist and contracting the forearm muscles.
Indications of forearm splints
The indications of forearm splints typically include the following:
- Dull forearm pain
- Pain is initially trivial but intensifies as activity continues that is often located at the back of the hand side of the forearm, half-way between the wrist and elbow
- Weakness in the wrist extensor muscles
- Tenderness deep within the forearm
- Pain is triggered when attempting to flex the wrist backwards against resistance
What are the possible causes?
Forearm splints are likely to develop among those who engage in activities that repeatedly use the wrists, especially during rapid, powerful movements.
Those who are at higher risk include those who engage in weight lifting, cricket, gymnastics and baseball. Remember that the condition affecting both the shin and forearm are due to microtrauma to the muscular attachment points to the bone, especially the periosteum that wraps the bone.
Management
If an individual has forearm splints, it is vital to take a break from any aggravating activity. You should apply an ice pack to relieve the pain and inflammation. A compression bandage should be utilized and raise the arm to reduce the swelling.
The doctor might prescribe anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen to relieve the inflammation and pain. In some cases, sports massage can be beneficial in relaxing tight muscles as well as breaking down any adhesions or scar tissues. If free from pain, the individual should perform exercises to stretch out the forearm extensor muscles.
