Rose Hip Allergy: Symptoms, Risks, and Safety Considerations

Rose hips are derived from various species of the rose bush and are commonly used in vitamin C supplements, herbal teas, syrups, and jams. In Canada, rose hip–containing products are widely available in health food stores and pharmacies.

Although rose hips are generally safe for most people, plant allergies are not uncommon, and allergic or irritant reactions to rose hips can occur. Anyone considering supplements that contain rose hips should consult a healthcare professional first—especially individuals with known plant or fruit allergies.

Possible Reactions to Rose Hips

Adverse reactions to rose hips are considered uncommon, but they have been documented, particularly in occupational or repeated exposure settings.

Respiratory Reactions

Some individuals exposed to rose hip dust—such as during processing or manufacturing—have developed respiratory allergies. In rare cases, these reactions have been severe and included anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic response.

Skin and Mucous Membrane Irritation

  • Itchiness of the skin

  • Mild irritation rather than a true allergic response

  • Redness or discomfort after contact

These reactions are more often classified as irritant responses rather than immune-mediated allergies.

Important Considerations for Canadians

  • Individuals with plant allergies should choose vitamin C supplements that do not contain rose hips

  • People with fruit allergies—especially to peaches, apricots, or apples—should use caution, as cross-reactivity is possible

  • Natural health products in Canada are regulated, but reactions can still occur depending on individual sensitivity

If any symptoms develop after consuming or handling rose hip products, stop use immediately and consult a healthcare provider.

⚠️ Seek emergency medical care right away if symptoms include:

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Swelling of the face, lips, or throat

  • Dizziness or collapse
